The Northeast is being hit with heavy rain, inflicting a flurry of flight delays and cancellations throughout a busy journey weekend forward of Labor Day and back-to-school season.
As of 12:15 a.m. ET Friday, 6,133 flights inside, into or out of the US had been delayed and 742 cancelled, in accordance with flight-tracking web site FlightAware.
“We’re experiencing some delays for flights to and from the Northeast tonight on account of climate within the area,” Southwest spokesperson Dan Landson stated in a press release to USA TODAY Thursday. “We admire our Clients’ endurance as we work to get them to their locations as Safely and rapidly as potential.”
Southwest had probably the most disruption, with 124 flights cancelled and 775 delayed.
The National Weather Service posted the next advisory on its web site:
“Showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain potential from the Northeast to the central Nice Plains late Thursday into early Friday. Heavy rain menace anticipated to settle farther to the south into the southern Mid-Atlantic area on Friday.
“In the meantime, robust to extreme storms w/ damaging winds and heavy rain seemingly in North Carolina and southern Virginia.”
Charlotte, Newark and LaGuardia are experiencing probably the most flight delays into and out of these airports: 604 delays flights at Charlotte Douglas Worldwide Airport, 531 at Newark Liberty Worldwide Airport and 402 at LaGuardia Airport.
